Green Sparrows: Dabu Hand-Block Printed Cotton Saree
Rows of small block-printed birds, in cream and soft tan-brown, perch across a fresh sage green. Each bird is outlined in fine black. The mix of cream and brown birds gives the print a playful look, and the repeat feels calm, like a flock settling in a garden. Bands of black, tan and cream frame the body and divide it from the pallu, so the saree looks neat and balanced when draped.
It is made in Bagru, Rajasthan, using Dabu mud-resist and hand-block printing. Artisans press carved wooden blocks onto the cloth one repeat at a time, resist the dye with a mud paste, and colour the cloth with natural dye. Tiny variations in the print, and soft marks in the cream areas, show it was made by hand. No two sarees are exactly alike.
