Ochre Bouquet: Dabu Hand-Block Printed Cotton Saree
Rows of small fern-like sprigs in earthy brown and black are scattered across a soft cream body. The pallu has a rich design. Large bouquet motifs in black and brown are set between bands of mustard ochre, and a black-and-white checkerboard border with tiny flowers runs between the rows. The body is light and simple, and the pallu is more decorative, so the saree looks balanced when draped.
It is made in Bagru, Rajasthan, using Dabu mud-resist and hand-block printing. Artisans press carved wooden blocks onto the cloth one repeat at a time, resist the dye with a mud paste, and colour it with natural dyes. Small variations in the print and soft marks in the cream areas show it was made by hand. No two sarees are exactly alike.
