Stone Waves: Dabu Hand-Block Printed Cotton Saree

Motifs of cream run across a soft stone-grey base. The chevron lines are printed in layers, so the pattern looks like ripples on water or a range of hills. The muted grey keeps the saree calm and modern, and the red lines add a warm accent. A plain black border at the top of the pallu frames the print.

It is made in Bagru, Rajasthan, using Dabu mud-resist and hand-block printing. Artisans press carved wooden blocks onto the cloth, resist the dye with a mud paste, and colour it with natural dyes. The fine crackle lines in the cream areas come from the mud resist and are the mark of true Dabu work. Colour and print placement vary slightly from saree to saree, so each one is unique.
